Comedy Writing: Creating Comic Characters

Using comedic archetypes to build structure and drive your story.

Story Studios Australia is proud to announce two upcoming events dedicated to the craft of comedy writing.

Taught by gainfully employed TV comedy writers Kit Richards and Alistair Baldwin, this session on June 4th will delve into comedic character creation, breaking down comedic archetypes and the ways both sitcoms and sketch comedy rely on character conflict to generate story.

The previous week’s session (TICKETED SEPARATELY), will guide writers through the art of structuring the perfect joke in a wide range of formulas, as well as contextualising them in narrative comedy, sketch and “late night” topical satire.

Come along to one session, or both and let the hilarity ensue!

Alistair Baldwin is a TV writer, comedian, director and playwright. He has written for Erotic Stories, The Weekly, Hard Quiz and Get Krack!n. Alistair was also a director on the AACTA Award winning web series Latecomers, and his first play Telethon Kid premiered at Malthouse Theatre in 2023.

Kit Richards is a Melbourne based musician and comedian whose TV credits include Hard Quiz, The 1% Club and Get Krack!n’. Her first solo comedy hour “Wool! A History of Australia’s Wool Industry: The Musical” was nominated for a Green Room Award for Best Cabaret Writing and her second solo show “Scandal! A Reflection on Essendon’s Doping Saga: The Musical?” won the 2020/2021 Moosehead Award. She has subsequently performed two additional comedy hours and has taught comedy writing at the VCA.
